Weekend Wonderings

Every week, Mr K sends me links to articles that he thinks AOW readers would like.  Some of them I tweet, some I post on our Facebook page, some of them I save for an unidentified Weekend Wonderings in the future.  Some of them make me angry, some of them make me smile, some are just absurd.

That Weekend Wonderings is here.  Thanks for being persistent, Mr K.  We’re lucky to have you out there, roaming the internet, thinking of us.

In 1996, a black teenager protected a white man from an angry mob that believed he supported the Ku Klux Klan.  It was an act of courage and kindness, and one we should bear in mind when thinking about whether, or how, we step in to public disorder.

Germany has become the EU’s first country to allow babies with characteristics of both gender to be registered as neither male or female.  Will other countries follow suit?

This article is about rich Chinese parents hiring American surrogate mothers for up to $120,000 per child.  Draw your own conclusions.  I did.  You will.

No doubt may of you have seen this team of teenage American football players do something rather special.  I implore you to take a short while out of your day to watch it.

Any frustrated parents of toddlers out there should take heart in this blog: “Reasons My Son Is Crying“.  Parents take pictures of their children in full-on tantrum mode and then submit the picture, along with the reason for the rage.  It’s a lesson in perspective, and in the absurdity of parenting.

I tweeted this already, but it bears re-reading.  The story of an extraordinary woman from Muzaffarnagar in India.

This article made me rage.  A look at marriage, sex and relationships from an economic perspective

I usually find letters to unborn children a bit creepy.  This one is particularly beautiful.

The incredible life of Philip Louis Ulric Cross.  Decorated airman, judge and diplomat.  Reading obituaries is the best way I know to get a little perspective.

Hope that gives you a bit of variety this weekend, readers…happy Saturday!

I’m interested in the whole Germany thing. This morning I saw this though which was an interesting perspective on it

My work now allows people to identify as Mx for those who don’t want to have a binary gender identity but these are adults, this is their choice – are we making choices for children that we shouldn’t? Should it be for them to decide? I have no idea on this one. I am glad it being thought about though.

That first story made me think so much when I read it that my head hurt. I’m going to keep thinking about it.

    I love this one. xx
