A busy few weeks for my growing family (current tally: 2 adults, 2 cats, 5 kittens (1 went to live next door – sob) and a rapidly growing baby Stella – don’t mention the husky puppy that Phil is begging for) has left me royally shattered.
We have a family wedding this weekend that’s Kind Of A Big Deal and whilst I’m so, so, so looking forward to seeing Phil’s sister and her man say their vows, I’m equally pee-my-pants excited about the prosepct of a long weekend in a posh hotel. ROOM SERVICE, people – are there more beautiful words in a more beautiful order to a pregnant woman? (Answer: No.) It’s being billed as our holiday for this year, after I ruined plans for our two weeks’ summer holiday by having astoundingly sucky morning sickness.
We’re travelling down to Devon on Friday and lunching at the River Cottage Canteen in Axminster – I am looking forward to this with as much barely-disguised glee as I am the arrival of our daughter… well, nearly as much. I want ALL THE FOOD. And to meet Hugh, too. (Phil keeps telling me probably won’t be there, something to do with being very busy, having lots of restaurants and being very famous etc etc…but he might be there, mightn’t he?)
There will be shopping in the afternoon, if you’ve got the time and the shoes Exeter is a great place to wander and come across dinky little independent shops that sell all the things. My favourite sells clothes, kitchen equipment, wooden giraffes and miscellaneous doorknobs. Amazing. We actually finished off the dresser in Stella’s room with doorknobs from this shop and now my Mum has decreed that she needs 17 mismatched doorknobs for the various cupboards and drawers in her kitchen. Guess what I’ll be spending my Friday afternoon doing?!
Checking into our delicious hotel on Friday evening will probably be the highlight of my week. Until the next day, of course, when more Alsopp’s than you could be quite sure what do with descend on the hotel for nuptials of S and P. Phil’s sister is the sweetest girl alive and her soon-to-be husband a party animal with an incredibly big heart, I have a feeling the wedding is going to be utterly delightful and there will definitely be tissues in my clutch. (Unlike at Bella’s wedding, where Gemma and I cried pretty much from start to finish with not a single Kleenex between us. Fail.) As for what I dress myself and my ever-expanding stomach in, this is this week’s contender and by virtue of the fact that I have zero shopping hours until the aforementioned Friday afternoon will likely be the actual outfit. Opinions are welcomed – particularly regarding my choice of hair accessory… crystal feather or actual peacock feathers?
Once this weekend is over, readers, you will find me in my bed. For approximately three weeks. Curled up with my intimacy-destroying pregnancy pillow reading Wolf Hall, Bring up the Bodies and Gift from the Sea as per your stunning recommendations from my last book post. If, for whatever reason, you do come looking for me, I advise you to bring Boost bars (the family packs), fruit smoothies and pictures of Harry McFly. Topless. (Him, not you.)
